Kozhikode is a
coastal city in the south Indian state of Kerala. It was a significant spice
trade center and is close to Kappad Beach. Kozhikode District found a place in
the World History with the discovery of Sea Route to India in 1498 by the
Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama. Vasco Da Gama landed at the Kappad sea
shore with three vessels and 170 men. A monument is constucted here to
commemorate the historical landing.
Some of the best among them are:
- Kappad Beach
- Thusharagiri Waterfalls
- Beypore Beach
- Mananchira Square
- Focus Mall
- Payyoli Beach
- Peruvannamuzhi Dam
Kappad Beach:
- Kappad Beach gives one a true taste of the Malabar. Locally, Kappad Beach is known as Kappakadavu and it is situated on the banks of the Korapuzha River. This beach is dotted with rocks covered in moss and the clear blue water beckons you to take a dip. Golden sand and fishing hamlets in the vicinity only add to its serenity.
- Kappad Beach to a tourist would be a tiny seafaring town that can be reached via the backwaters. Untouched and sparsely populated, riding down the scenic backwaters of the Korappuzha River to Kappad Beach is an enchanting experience.
Thusharagiri
Waterfalls:
- Thusharagiri literally means 'snowcapped mountains'. Two streams originating from the Western Ghats meet here to form the Chalippuzha River.
- The river diverges into three waterfalls creating a snowy spray, which gives the name - Thusharagiri. The highest of the three falls is the Thenpara Fall dropping from a height of 75 meter. The first waterfall can be reached easily while the remaining two falls can be reached from the first one by trekking through thick forest.
- Thusharagiri waterfalls never dry out so can be visited throughout the year. Monsoon starting from June brings plenty of water thus creating a great roar. However, because of heavy down pour and slippery conditions, peak of monsoon is not an ideal time to visit here. The best time to visit Thusharagiri waterfall is from September to December.
Beypore Beach:
It is scenic and the waves are not too harsh for a good
swim. And rustic charm is pervasive even though concrete structures have
sprung up here and there. The Beypore Port has a historical significance as it
was one of the ports where trading commenced between Asia and the Middle East
and was considered an important maritime and trade centre.
Mananchira Square:
Mananchira Square is a popular tourist destination in
Kozhikode, well known for its beautiful surroundings and pleasant ambience,
comprises of an artificial stream, open-air theatre, and musical stage. Mananchira
Square is a park in the heart of Kozhikode. The historic ‘maidan’, adjacent to
Mananchira has been converted into a garden, an open-air theatre, sculptures,
an artificial hill, and a musical fountain.
Focus Mall:
The Focus Mall, said to be the first
ever mall in the district, is all set to revolutionize the shopping experience
in Calicut. With thoughtfully designed spaces, futuristic facilities and a
prime location that ensures ever- increasing footfalls. Focus Mall is situated
in the center and heart of Calicut City with wide approach from all areas.
Payyoli Beach:
- Payyoli Beach, is yet another beautiful stretch of golden sands with shallow waters. Payyoli is one of the most outstanding tourist spots in this region with several thousands of tourists visiting the beach every week. The beach is ideal for water sports and sun-bath. The beach has a stretch of coconut palm trees which enhances the beauty of this lovely beach. This is a good place for swimming.
- Trikkottur Perumalpuram Temple is nearby attraction.
Peruvannamuzhi Dam:
People love to visit this place along with their
families and friends to explore the exotic surroundings of the dam and to
experience activities like rowboat, speedboat cruises, and many more. It gives
them immense opportunities to travel around dense jungles, artificial lake,
stunning landscapes, and lush green hillocks.
