Wildlife Sanctuaries in South India



Here is a list of five such places in South India where you can enjoy some wildlife spotting.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary:                             
While you are on your way to the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, don’t be surprised if you are stuck on the road in a traffic jam, created by an elephant. Part of the Wayanad Wildlife reserve, this national park is known for its huge population of elephants all of whom roam around freely, even entering the urban landscapes. Besides the elephants, watch out for the little colourful winged beauties throughout the park.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary:

Covered with a thick growth of dense forests it is a haven for the wildlife and rare avian species. If this winter you are planning a trip to Kerala don't miss its Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a paradise for wildlife lovers and nature gazers. Ensconced between the Annamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala, several rivers flow in the area too.As you walk through the thick forests of bamboo stands, teak, rosewood and sandalwood you will find the area is marshy, with scattered patches of grasslands.

Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary:

Located in the Thirunelvelli district of TamilNadu, the Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary covers an extensive area of 895 sq km.Wild life lovers will thoroughly enjoy a visit to this wildlife park. The sight of so many members of the animal kingdom is sure to amaze everyone. For those who love adventure, the very thought of residing in the Forest Rest House at Mundanthurai is exciting enough. Coupled with it is the thrill of seeing the wild beasts in such natural surroundings.

Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary:

The importance of the Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary can very well be estimated from the fact that it is part of one of the 18 biodiversity hot spots that are to be found in the whole world. This Wild Life Reserve along with the Mudanthurai Wild Life Sanctuary is also part of a Tiger Reserve Project.There is variety and diversity in each and every feature of the Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary including flora and fauna. The area is very rich geographically. The vegetation of the forests mostly comprise tigers. Panthers, jackals, jungle cats, striped hyenas. of Tropical wet evergreen and Tropical dry deciduous trees. Thorny plants are also to be seen. The dense forests are all for you to explore on your trip to this wild life sanctuary.

Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary:

Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary houses half the world's population of this rare mountain goat. The Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary is an attempt to preserve this rare species of the goat family, which is fast approaching extinction. Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of the Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. Visitors are only allowed to go inside the tourism area in the Rajamala region. This method is adopted in order to restore harmony and sanctify the natural habitat that facilitates the process of conservation of these wild animals. The total number of Nilgiri Tahrs in Rajamala is estimated to be 1317.
