Situated at the tip of the Indian Peninsula, Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of mainland India. Kanyakumari is located near the Western Ghats. Kanyakumari has been one of the major centers of arts, culture and religion since the ancient times. The city’s beaches are also the only beaches in the world where you can experience both sunrise and the sunset. Vivekananda Rock Memorial:
  • The colossal and imposing ‘Vivekananda Rock Memorial’ is located offshore around 500 m east of mainland of Vavathurai, Kanyakumari.
  • Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari on December 24, 1892, prior to his Chicago trip to take part in the 1893 ‘World Religious Conference’. It is said that he meditated on the rock for two days and attained enlightenment.
Tsunami Memorial Park:
  • Tsunami Memorial Park is a park at the shores of Kanyakumari near the Bhagavathy Amman Temple and GandhiMandapam. This park has been erected here in memory of the hundreds of people who lost their lives during a Tsunami which stuch the Indian Ocean in 2004.
  • People from places near and far visit this monument to pay homage to all those who lost their lives.
Vattakottai Fort:
  • Vattakottai Fort, which translates to the 'Circular Fort' is a seaside fort near Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India. The fort is largely made of granite blocks and today, a part of the fort even extends into the sea.
  • Vattakottai Fort commands a picturesque view of the calm waters of the Arabian from one side of the parade ground of the fort, and the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal on the other.
Ayya Vaikundar Nizhal Thangal:
  • The highlight of this place is its unique architectural style - Sahasrara (literal meaning white lotus). Historians believe that it is the first temple to boast Sahasrara architecture.
  • Some of the popular festivals celebrated here are Thiru Edu-Vasippu, Ayya Vaikunda Avataram, Thirukkarthigai and Diwali.
Gandhi Memorial:
  • Gandhi Mandapam has been constructed at the spot where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were kept in an urn for public view before a portion of it was immersed into the confluence of the three seas, Triveni sangamam, in 1948. 
  • Every year on Gandhiji's birthday, the 2nd October, the sun's rays falls on the exact spot where the urn was displayed before immersion.
Thiruvalluvar Statue:
  • Thiruvalluvar, is the author of the Thirukkural. Thirukkural is regarded as a renowned work, eulogised as a directory of the code of conduct and ethics to humanity. 
  • Through 1330 couplets, the revered poet deals with the general administration and codified and gave clear-cut directions to mankind on how they should behave and act in a social, political, religious and family circles.
