Yercaud is a hill
station in Salem District. It is located in the Shevaroys range of hills in the
Eastern Ghats. It is situated at an altitude of 1515 metres (4970 ft) above sea
level, and the highest point in Yercaud is the Servarayan temple, at 5,326 feet
(1,623 m). The
hill station is named owing to the abundance of forest near the lake, the
name signifying Lake Forest. As a popular tourist destination, Yercaud is also
called as Jewel of the South. Coffee and citrus fruits, most notably oranges,
are grown in abundance, as well as bananas, pears and jackfruit. Scenically,
Yercaud is as enchanting and picturesque as the hill stations on the Eastern
Ghats and trekking will be an experience.
Anna Park
Nature Park established by the year 2008. It has an
aquarium, rose garden, artificial waterfalls and Musical fountain. A nice place
for kids, But all this is of poor maintenance.
Shevaroy Hills
The Servarayan hills have several old coffee
plantations and a sanatorium. The major areas of tourist interest are the
Yercaud Orchidarium of the Botanical Survey of India and the old coffee
estates. Some patches of the original forests still exist in the Shevaroy hills
and those in higher slopes and peaks contain several endemic species of plants
and fauna.
Kiliyur falls
Kiliyur Falls is a waterfall in the Shervaroyan hill
range in the Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu. The waters overflowing the Yercaud Lake
fall 300 ft (91 meters) into the Kiliyur Valley. The falls is situated at a
distance of 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) from the Yercaud lake. The final 500
meters (1,600 feet) or so consist only of a rough unpaved steep pathway. But it
is a breathtaking sight in the monsoon time when the water levels are at the
maximum. The best time to visit this place is immediately after the monsoons.
Shevaroy temple
Located at the peak of flattop Shevaroy Hills,
Shevaroy Temple is dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan who is believed to be the lord
of the hills. Another deity here is Goddess Kaveri who is believed to preserve
River Cauveri. The temple is located inside a dark and narrow cave, which is
impenetrable behind the idols of Lord Shevaroyan and Goddess Kaveri. The native
tribes come to this place in hundreds during the time of the annual festival in
the temple, which is in the month of May. The view from this place is
breathtaking with several hills all around with the extensive plains spreading
across the hills.
Yercaud boat house
Yercaud Lake is one of the few natural lakes in the
many hill stations that dot south India. Boating and having a picnic on her
banks is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend the day when not trekking in
these dense forest hills and shoals. One bank of this lake has a beautifully
manicured flower garden while the other, the Yercaud Boathouse. This lake is
perfect for families with children of different ages as it has several
activities with which they can be occupied.
